In 17th century Holland papercuts were considered to be a work of art
and you had to spend a lot of money to buy one. Three famous papercut
artists go by the name of Jantje (little John) and they all have nicknames.
Jantje I (1803-1883) from Zeeland, was also called 'Smart John'. Jantje II
(Jan Visscher 1855-1938) from the island of Marken, they called him 'John the Pious',
and Jantje III (Jantje de Jong - Brouwer, 1924 - 2002) is lovingly
remembered as 'John the Joker'.
The late Mrs. Hil Bottema, curator in the Open Air Museum in Arnhem,
bestowed this nickname on Jantje de Jong - Brouwer. Hil was also a gifted
papercut artist, as two of her papercuts at the end of the page bear
witness.
